SERIES OF DREAMS: Selections from 17 Years / 68 Issues of Shots Magazine
The celebrated debut title of Skeleton Key Press edited by Russell Joslin
with a foreword by Sally Mars
In Series of Dreams, Russell Joslin references work curated over 17 years as Publisher & Editor of Shots magazine to create a uniquely poetic and conceptually unified collection of imagery which simultaneously comforts, challenges, and delights the viewer. This beautifully printed volume includes 157 striking and memorable works from Joslin’s 68 issues of the magazine. Meticulously sown images are divided into thought-provoking and luscious chapters, but it is much more than a “best of” anthology. Elaborating on the surrealist sensibilities of Joslin’s Black Forest [Candela Books, 2014], Series of Dreams achieves an elusive balance between the humane and the ethereal; that rare and magical aesthetic that lets us experience the universal nature of dreaming while acknowledging the highly personal experience of one’s own dreams. The work of each artist is celebrated and allowed to breathe, each image recognized for its beauty and mystery; this, while the work of Joslin—through his deliberate and purposeful selection and sequencing—offers a sense of community and cohesion. Series of Dreams is the debut title of Skeleton Key Press.
Listed as one of the BEST PHOTOGRAPHY BOOKS OF 2018 by: Elizabeth Avedon [Elizabeth Avedon’s Journal], Collier Brown [photo-eye Books], and Suzanne Révy & Elin Spring [What Will You Remember?]
“It is Russell Joslin's breathtaking ability to source, to see, to recognize photography that transcends reiteration to become Art, yes, and further to describe Beauty—Beauty as profound and nuanced as kindness is—which defined his 17 year tenure as editor of Shots and is here distilled into intoxicating lucidity.” —Sally Mars, from the foreword of Series of Dreams
“Like a cherished sonata, you can listen to this book many a time.” —Arno Rafael Minkkinen
“Series of Dreams gathers in one volume a dizzying array of talent published in Shots during Russell Joslin’s tenure. Rarely have I come across an anthology so handsomely produced and brilliantly curated. I’ve flipped its pages hundreds of times already, and never once without a flutter of anticipation.” —Collier Brown, Od Review
“The layout and combination of the images in Series of Dreams are truly spectacular and I believe that Russell Joslin’s latest book is doing exactly what it should be doing—connecting the dream world with the viewer.” —Roger Ballen
“Russell Joslin builds upon cursive paradoxes and prolific contrasts… The reader is confronted with mysterious portraits, stark landscapes, perturbing animals, ordinary objects, and even indiscernible images. There is simply one connection between the photographs: there is space to find Beauty in each [one].” —Sarah Sunday, Musée
“Series of Dreams is a beautiful volume encompassing a remarkably fecund publishing tenure.” —George Slade, re:photographica
